Honourary Chairperson

Greg Gould is a Fredericton native and FHS graduate.  As an athlete he participated in Cross Country, Track & Field and Basketball, and continued on to UNB where he earned his Bachelors in Physical Education, as well as a BA and MA in Education. While at UNB Greg combined his love for sports and teaching and embarked on his coaching career which has spanned over 4 decades.

He started with the Teachers College Women’s Team and won the New Brunswick Collegiate Championship in 1972. He started his high school teaching career in Saint John at the Millidgeville North High School before moving to Moncton High School for 3 years. While at MHS he coached Cross Country, Track & Field as well as Basketball.  His Track Team won the NBIAA Championship in 1977 and that same year he was named Head Coach for the NB Canada Games Track & Field Team that competed in Newfoundland.

Greg would like to thank Carla, his wife of thirty one years, for her love and support - without which it would not have been possible to coach for all those years. Greg very much enjoyed coaching both of his children Ashley and Jared through the provincial programs from Mini through Juvenile, and also thanks them for their support and encouragement.

He would like to acknowledge his players over the years - he notes their commitment and hard work as instrumental to his coaching success.

Greg’s boy’s MHS Basketball Teams finished NBIAA AAA Runners up all three years. In his third year at MHS Greg also coached the girl’s team during the same season.  The 1977 girl’s team, which included 2005 Honorary Chair Ann Stone, won the NBIAA AAA Championship.

A number of players from those Moncton High teams became involved in coaching basketball in the Moncton area. Players such as Terry Miller, Norval McConnell, Paul Sullivan, Heather Wood and Ann Stone went on to distinguishing coaching careers.

Greg moved from MHS to Fredericton and coached the FHS girl’s basketball team that won back to back Provincial NBIAA AAA Championships in 1978 and 1979.  The following year he switched back to coaching boys and co-coached the FHS boy’s team for the next nine years, making seven NBIAA AAA final appearances with six of those teams winning Championships.

In 1988 Greg returned to coaching girls as Head Coach for Saint Thomas University where his team won two New Brunswick Collegiate Championships.  Greg was instrumental in moving STU into the Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association.  His 1994 STU team won the ACAA Championship and competed in the CCAA National Championships in Lethbridge, Alberta.  Greg was named ACAA coach of the year that season.

Greg took over the Riverview High School girls program in 2002 and began to build it into one of the strongest high school girls programs in Atlantic Canada.  In his nine years at RHS his teams won seven Northeast Conference titles, one NBIAA Runner up and three consecutive NBIAA AAA Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011, winning 108 games while losing only three over these three seasons.

Many of Greg’s Riverview players have gone on to play at the CIS or CCAA level with six currently playing for AUS teams. Several others, including Michelle Philips, Ali Forbes, Shannon Parlee and Amy Barter have gone on to coach.

Greg says one of his early highlights at Riverview was when his 2004 team won the Moncton Ladies Basketball Classic. He was awarded the NBIAA coach of the year following that 2004 season.
